1 November marks World Author Day, which is celebrated in over 100 countries worldwide. It’s a time of admiring and honouring those creative souls who we look to for insight and escape, so let’s have some fun with literary-themed screen printing projects for yourself or your school classes.

Write word art poetry

You can applaud the written word of your top authors with a screen printed poem of your own. Take a photocopy of one of their book pages, then set to work with scissors to create phrases – or alternatively, black out words until you build a poem on the page. Then, recreate these phrases with a screen print design on a tea towel or tote bag. They’ll be your words, but they’ll also include the essence of your favourite writer.

Wear your heart on your sleeve

T-shirt slogans are one of the more effective ways to demonstrate your love for an author’s work – and to identify any fellow enthusiasts! Find inside jokes or references from the books and work on producing a print that captures these in a witty or graphically stunning way. Simplicity often works best, whether it’s a text-based or illustrated style. Stick to water based fabric screen printing ink and soft organic cotton for a high

Design fictional travel posters

Do you love the works of C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien or George R. R. Martin? Set yourself the challenge of creating destination posters for Narnia, Bag End or Westeros, making them appealing and intriguing to those who haven’t ‘been’ there yet. These could be put up in the library or enjoyed in your own house. If you need to match colours, Permaset’s Permatone textile and fabric ink range has gained organic approval by the Soil Association in the UK. That means you won’t need to worry about volatile organic solvents or harsh fumes while you’re printing.

Create a fanzine

You could choose to bring all of these elements together and create a fanzine for your favourite author or book. This could include quotes, images, details like floor plans or maps of fictional locations, and your own thoughts and musings in vivid screen print paint. The advantage of screen printing this is that you can quickly and easily produce high quality, limited edition batches of these zines to be given away or sold to other fans. Lots of work? Sure. Lots of fun to put together? Definitely!
