Green is the new black!

With the ‘eco-friendly movement’ going mainstream, many of us are now becoming earth conscious and choosing to buy products that help conserve the environment.  Since corporate sustainability has become a necessity, using eco-friendly inks for printing has become the norm for many companies choosing to go green.

What are some excellent alternatives to conventional inks that many companies are now using for fabric or paper printing? Here are three of the best and most popular:

Soy Based Inks

Soy based inks are made from oil extracted from soya beans, and mixed with other environmentally friendly compounds like waxes and resins. These are excellent alternatives to oil-based or petroleum-based inks. Using soy based ink for screen printing releases less than five per cent volatile organic compounds (VOC’s), thereby reducing the amount of air pollutants released in the workspace and protecting your staff and the environment. Soy based ink is popularly used in newspaper and other types of document printing since it delivers brighter, more vibrant colours. It’s also more cost-effective compared to oil-based inks.

Water Based Inks

Using water based ink is predicted to increase by 30% in the next 5 years in the fabric printing industry because it offers many benefits to artists, manufacturers, employees and end customers.  It produces ‘soft-feel’ prints on garments which many customers prefer , so there has been an increase in the use of water based inks due the comfort they afford. Water based ink is not only easy to use and clean, however it provides great coverage as it can be spread easily. It is also a great choice for artists and manufacturers since it reduces the amount of harmful chemicals in the office, creating a safer and more comfortable working environment. You can learn more about the benefits of water based inks by reading our previous article.

UV Inks

Ultraviolet (UV) inks come in a liquid form and turn to solid once exposed to UV light. This eco-friendly ink is applied the same way as conventional ink during the printing process, but once it passes under the light it dries within seconds. Unlike conventional inks, UV inks do not contain solvents that evaporate and release VOCs, which are considered harmful to the environment. Using UV ink also provides a faster turnaround time since it dries quickly, thereby increasing production speed and helps you save on costs.

UV ink, water based ink and soy based ink are three of the best eco-friendly inks that you can use not only to cut costs and improve production rate but, most importantly, to protect the environment.
